Bi-Han may not be the only Sub-Zero that could appear in Mortal Kombat 2. Many important Mortal Kombat fighters were defeated before the tournament officially started, as Outworld attempted to sabotage Earthrealm’s chance at winning the last Mortal Kombat competition and failed. But that doesn’t mean they’re all gone for good. Mortal Kombat characters tend to come back from the dead through various means.
In the Mortal Kombat video game franchise, characters such as Shao Kahn, Sindel, Kung Lao, and Liu Kang have experienced brutal deaths but still managed to return thanks to magic, necromancy, time travel, or alternate timeline shenanigans. Bi-Han is notable in Mortal Kombat history for returning as the wraith Noob Saibot after Scorpion killed him back when he was still known as the original Sub-Zero, and it seems the Mortal Kombat movie franchise can follow the same pattern. If true, this would also help introduce a brand-new Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat 2.
In the Mortal Kombat video games, Hanzo Hasashi a.k.a. Scorpion burns Sub-Zero to a crisp in revenge for his own murder at the hands of the cryomancer. But similar to Scorpion, Bi-Han doesn’t stay dead. Instead, Quan Chi resurrects Bi-Han, whose ice powers get replaced with the ability to manipulate shadows. Although he owes Quan Chi his second chance at life in Netherrealm, the only thing that drives the now emotionless Bi-Han is his hatred for Scorpion. Calling himself Noob Saibot, Bi-Han begins to serve Quan Chi and the Mortal Kombat 2 Potential villain, Elder God Shinnok.
Similar to the games, Hanzo Hasashi kills Sub-Zero at the end of 2021’s Mortal Kombat in revenge for killing him and his clan hundreds of years prior. Hanzo himself achieves this after descending to Netherrealm and coming back as Scorpion, which suggests that Bi-Han may have a similar opportunity. Mortal Kombat 2 could delve deeper into Netherrealm and introduce Quan Chi, who could be gathering fallen fighters for his army of undead wraiths. Hanzo Hasashi already got his shot at revenge in the first Mortal Kombat movie. Now it’s time for Bi-Han to get his in the sequel.
When Bi-Han becomes Noob Saibot in the Mortal Kombat video game franchise, his younger brother Kuai Liang steps up and takes up the Sub-Zero mantle to avenge his older brother. However, he eventually distances himself from Bi-Han and sides with Raiden and Earthrealm’s champions to defeat Shao Kahn. Unlike Bi-Han, Kuai Liang is driven by justice instead of revenge, which leads him to become Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei clan and give it a heroic overhaul. In fact, Kuai Liang goes as far as to make peace with Scorpion, which further divides the brothers.
Mortal Kombat 2 may not have enough time to develop Kuai Liang’s complex relationship with Bi-Han, but it could introduce him as the new Sub-Zero. Kuai Liang could side with Earthrealm and form an unlikely allegiance with Scorpion before Bi-Han returns as Noob Saibot and confronts him in a future movie. A possible obstacle is Kuai Liang’s age, as he would need to have stopped aging centuries ago or be resurrected to fight in the present day. However, Outworld could find a way around it, as Mortal Kombat 2 could establish Kuai Liang as Bi-Han’s descendant. The latter option would fit perfectly as a parallel to Cole Young’s status as Scorpion’s descendant and successor.
Mortal Kombat isn’t the same without its two most famous characters. So, if Mortal Kombat 2 resurrects Bi-Han as Noob Saibot, bringing Kuai Liang in as Sub-Zero seems like a reasonable way to retain the faces of the franchise while also shaking up the status quo. Kuai Liang’s introduction gives Bi-Han and Scorpion the chance to evolve their enmity without taking the Sub-Zero mantle out of the equation, and given that Kuai Liang is a more heroic character than his brother, Mortal Kombat 2 can also give Sub-Zero a fresh role in the form of an Earthrealm champion in the live-action Mortal Kombat universe.
Without Kuai Liang, the conflict between Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the Mortal Kombat movies could stagnate in an endless loop of revenge killings. Besides, with Scorpion and Sub-Zero on the same team, at least temporarily, Mortal Kombat 2 can focus on developing new villains like Quan Chi, Shinnok, and Shao Kahn, who could provide an ideal reason for an exciting Scorpion/Sub-Zero team-up fight on the big screen. And Noob Saibot’s loyalty to Quan Chi and Shinnok would be the cherry on top to make this conflict more interesting.
